2 Umpire System Fundamentals
-
Starting Positions
The starting positions in the 2-umpire system are referred to as A,B and C. Each one representing a spot on the field that puts us in an optimal position to see our immediate and most important plays. This is strictly determined by the positions of the runners.
-
Working Area
The working area is the rectangular space behind the pitcher’s mound that the base umpire will use to shade runners and move throughout during a play, only leaving when they have a “Play” being made on a runner.
-
Angle Distance - Plays at 1st Base
Angle/Distance will talk about our approach to talking force plays at first base. When we change our angle or move closer/further from a play, it changes the way we perceive the play and can be a leading cause of bad judgment.
